Free up iCloud storage without losing a single photo
Photos and videos are usually the largest part of iCloud storage. Export them to a drive you own, then let Export iCloud remove them from iCloud — safely, one verified file at a time.

Why your iCloud is full
Apple gives every account 5 GB for free, shared by iCloud Photos, device backups, Messages, iCloud Drive and app data. For most people, photos and videos are by far the biggest item — a few thousand 4K videos and HEIC photos can easily take 50–200 GB. Check yours in Settings → [your name] → iCloud (or Manage Account Storage).
If Photos is the big bar, deleting a few apps or old backups won’t fix it for long. Moving the photo library itself will. (For a full checklist, see how to free up iCloud storage and why your iCloud storage is full.)
The safe way to remove photos from iCloud
Deleting photos from iCloud deletes them from every device signed in to that Apple ID, so you need a complete local copy first. Doing this by hand means downloading in 1,000-photo batches from iCloud.com, checking every ZIP, then deleting the same items — error-prone and slow.
Export iCloud’s Export and Delete mode combines both steps:
- It downloads an item as the original file to your chosen folder.
- Only after the download succeeds does it delete that item from iCloud.
- If a download fails, the item stays in iCloud.
Deleted items go to Recently Deleted, where Apple keeps them for up to 30 days — a final safety net while you check your export.
Step by step
- Download Export iCloud for Windows or Mac and sign in with your Apple ID.
- Choose an export folder with enough space — an external hard drive works great.
- Optional but recommended: run Export Only first and spot-check the files.
- Switch to Export and Delete and start. Choose Oldest First to clear out old years first.
- When you’re happy, empty Recently Deleted in the Photos app to reclaim the space immediately.
- In Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage, downgrade your iCloud+ plan if you no longer need it.
How much can you save?
If your photo library is the reason you pay for 200 GB or 2 TB of iCloud+, exporting it can let you move to a smaller plan or back to the free tier — while keeping every original on storage you own. Export iCloud’s plans start free, and a one-time pack covers a typical cleanup without any subscription.
